Description of the attraction
Villa Negrotto Cambiaso with its lush parkland is one of the most popular attractions in Arenzano. In turn, the attraction of the park is considered to be an extraordinary greenhouse, built in the Liberty style in 1931 by the order of the Marquise Matilda Negrotto Cambiaso and by the project of the architect Lamberto Cusani. Every spring in this snow-white greenhouse, topped with a dome, the FlorArte exhibition is held, where you can see the works of Ligurian painters and amazing flower arrangements.
The park of Villa Negrotto Cambiaso was designed by the architect Luigi Rovelli, who also worked on the Villa Brignole Sale Duquesa di Galliera. He was also responsible for the restoration of the Villa Negrotto Cambiaso in 1880 on behalf of the Marquise Luisa Sauli Pallavicino. Rovelli gave the villa the appearance of a medieval castle with towers and an English-style garden with a small lake, streams, a waterfall and even a cave that is located at the entrance to the villa.
It is impossible to overestimate the botanical value of the park - here you can find such rare plant species as marsh cypress, barbecue, coral erythrine, capitate yew and Japanese cryptomeria. But the main tree of the park is the 125-year-old Lebanese cedar, notable for its huge size - peacocks roam around the 30-meter tree, and various species of birds nest in its crown. The cedar itself is protected as part of the Monte Beigua Regional Natural Park.
As for the Villa Negrotto Cambiaso, it was built for the Marquis Tobia Pallavicino, who in 1558 acquired a vast plot of land with a 20-meter tower, erected in the 13th century. A villa was built next to this tower, which was a typical summer residence of a noble Genoese family. As mentioned above, in 1880, by order of the Marquise Luisa Sauli Pallavicino, the villa was restored, and a spacious park was laid out around it. Since 1981, Villa Negrotto Cambiaso has been home to the municipality of Arenzano.
