Description of the attraction
The Municipal Museum of Rimini is housed in a former Jesuit monastery built in the mid-18th century by the Bologna-based architect Alfonso Torreggiani. Nearby, in Piazza Ferrari, stands the Church of San Francesco Saverio.
From 1797 to 1977, the monastery housed a hospital, first a military one, then a civil one, and now its building has been given over to the City Museum. In 40 galleries, covering an area of 3 thousand square meters, there are over 1,500 different exhibits related to the history of Rimini and its environs. The courtyard garden houses a collection of ancient Roman epigraphs. On the ground floor of the museum, there is a section dedicated to René Gruo, the famous local fashion designer who died in 2004. The former cellar of the monastery now houses a new archaeological section, opened in 2010. It contains artifacts from prehistoric times to late antiquity that tell the story of Rimini. The acquaintance with imperial Rimini can be continued on the first floor - there are exhibited excellent mosaics from the Palazzo Diotallevi, sculptures, coins, ceramics, bronze, glass, etc. An invaluable exhibit in this section is the surgical instruments found in the so-called House of the Surgeon in Piazza Ferrari.
The second and third floors of the museum are occupied by the Art Gallery, whose works date back to the 14-19th centuries. On the second floor, you can see frescoes, ceramics and paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries, commissioned by the powerful ruler of Malatesta. And here is also a 14th-century fresco called "The Day of Judgment" that once adorned the walls above the triumphal arch in the church of Sant'Agostino. The section of the Middle Ages contains about 300 exhibits - sculptures, illustrated manuscripts, works of art from the 14th century.
On the third floor, paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries are displayed, among the authors of which are Guido Cagnacci, Il Centino, Il Guercino, Simone Cantarini and Giovanni Battista Costa.

Museum opening hours - Tue-Fri 16.00-22.30, Sat-Sun-holidays 11.00 -22.30, closed on Mondays. The House of the Surgeon is part of the museum, the ticket purchased at the museum is valid for the House of the Surgeon and vice versa
