Description of the attraction

The Church of Sant Ambrogio in the resort town of Alassio in Liguria is located on the square of the same name in the very center of the city. It was built in the second half of the 15th century on the site of a small temple of the 10th century, and in 1507 it received the status of a parish. The building was originally built in the Romanesque style, but at the beginning of the 18th century it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. The bell tower of the church with its pointed and three-leafed windows retains the features of the late Romano-Gothic style, and the Renaissance façade was completed in 1896.

The beautiful and impressive central portal of Sant'Ambrogio was made in 1511 of stone and decorated with reliefs of Saint Ambrogio, Christ and the Apostles with various dates and names. Inside, the central vault is painted with frescoes depicting scenes from the life of the patron saint of the church - this is the creation of Virgilio Gran from the town of Albenga. Also, the interior of the church is decorated with works by famous 17th century Genoese artists Bernardo Castello, Giovanni Andrea de Ferrari and Giulio Benso. In the right side aisle there is the altarpiece of Santa Anna and a painting by Francesco Carrega of Porto Maurizio. The main tabernacle is made of black marble and decorated with exquisite engraving from the late 15th century - it contains the famous relics of "Korpi Santi".

The churchyard in front of the main entrance was built in 1638 and lined with white and gray pebbles. And not far from the church of Sant Ambrogio is the chapel of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria.
