Description of the attraction
The Church of São João de Caseles is one of the main attractions of Canillo and one of the most beautiful churches in Andorra.
The temple, built in the XI-XII centuries, stands on a small hill at the exit of the village and is an excellent example of the Romanesque architecture of this small European country. From here, a magnificent view of the picturesque valley surrounded by mountains opens up.
The real decoration of the church of São João de Caseles is considered to be its three-story bell tower - the highest in the country. The bell tower was erected separately from the church building, but was later attached to it. Each of its floors has windows. As for the two upper floors, they are distinguished by twin windows, which are decorated with beautiful arches made in the Lombard style. The church is one-nave with a semicircular apse. Two entrances lead to it, located in the east and north walls. The structure of the nave of the temple is simple and rather high.
Both porticoes, erected approximately in the 16th and 17th centuries, have survived to this day. Going inside the monastery, you can see the well-preserved remains of the 12th century Romanesque stucco molding, surrounded by frescoes. Church altar XVI century has a high artistic value. Its details show the influence of the Renaissance style very well.
