Description of the attraction
The sundial square in Siauliai was built for the anniversary of the city. In 1981, on the eve of the 750th anniversary, a competition for the best square was announced. Three architects from Siauliai won the competition - A. Chernyauskas, A. Vishnyunas, R. Jurela.
The main accent on the square is the sculpture "Sagittarius" (Šaulis), popularly called the "Golden Boy". This bronze sculpture is almost four meters high. The figure of an archer with arrows and a bow in his hands stands on a ball, and the ball itself is on an 18-meter arrow. The sculpture, in addition to its beauty, also has a symbolic meaning. The battle that took place on the territory of the city under Saul is symbolized by the sculpture and the sun, there is also a version that it was from here that the name of the city appeared.
The second symbolic accent is the sundial on the bridge square, the highest in Lithuania. The numbers 12, 3 and 6 are visible on them, which symbolizes the first mention of the city in historical chronicles, since it dates back to 1236.
