Mount Enos

Description of the attraction

Mount Enos is the highest peak not only of Kefalonia, but of all the Ionian Islands. Its height is 1628 m (5341 lb). Together with other peaks, Enos forms a mountain range that runs through the central part of the island. In 1962, the Greek government declared most of the mountain range a National Reserve, and now this area is under state protection.

The slopes of Enos are predominantly covered with the unique Kefalonian spruce (Greek spruce), which is native to the island of Kefalonia. Today, however, the Kefalonian spruce can be found in other parts of the world, but for the most part it is already a crossed variety. The so-called "black pine" also grows on the slopes of Enos. During the Venetian domination, due to the thick dark covers, Mount Enos received the name Monte Negro (Black Mountain), which has survived to this day. Due to strong fires, part of the forest cover of Enos was destroyed and some places are bare rocky areas, only occasionally overgrown with vegetation.

The flora of Enos is quite diverse. Among the many plant species, rare species of violets and orchids are of particular interest (except for Kefalonian spruce). The fauna of these places is also impressive. For example, on the slopes of the mountain you can find a rare species of wild horses, numerous herds of goats, hares, turtles and many other animals. It is also home to a large number of birds of prey and not only birds.

On a clear sunny day, from the top of the mountain, you can see the Peloponnese and Aetolia, as well as the islands of Zakynthos, Lefkada and Ithaca, which is a stunningly beautiful sight.
