Description of the attraction
Mount Bolshoi Afips, located in the vicinity of the resort town of Gelendzhik, is one of the most popular places among fans of active recreation. The mountain is located on the Main Dividing Range, in the interfluve of the three upper reaches of Shebsh, Afips and Levaya Shchel.
The name of the peak, most likely, comes from the Abkhazian word "Afy", which means "the god of thunder and lightning". The original name of the mountain, apparently, was modified, now it corresponds to the name of the river Afips, which flows here, which originates from the northern slopes of the mountain.
The height of Mount Bolshoy Afips is 700 m. The ascent to the top is carried out practically without any additional equipment. Vertical slopes start only closer to the top, but a wonderful panorama of the surroundings can be seen already from the middle of the slope.
The traditional route up the mountain starts from Romashkina Polyana, which is located at the confluence of the Bystry Creek and the Afips River. The dirt road runs along the right bank of the Afipsa valley upstream. Next, you should climb the ridge of the watershed in the place of a treeless, open area and move along the ridge to the northwest - to the top of Bolshoi Afips, surrounded by mountain meadow vegetation. A geodetic mark was installed here.
The woody world of this massif is quite diverse. Basically, beech and oak prevail here, and berry yew is also occasionally found on the northern slopes. In winter, skiing is possible on the safe slopes. As for equipment rental points, they are not here, so all equipment must be brought with you.
In the summer season, the meadows on a gentle slope are covered with dense alpine grasses. At low altitudes you can often see tourists and vacationers having picnics.
