Description of the attraction
Sotiros is a picturesque mountain village in the western part of the Greek island of Thassos. The settlement is located about 20 km south-west of the administrative center of the island of Thassos (Limenas) on the western slope of Mount Ipsario at an altitude of 350 m above sea level and offers its guests breathtaking panoramic views, fantastic landscapes and clean, healthy air. It is ideal for people with respiratory problems.
Sotiros is a traditional Greek settlement with labyrinths of narrow cobbled streets, pretty little red-tiled houses surrounded by greenery and cozy taverns and cafes, where you can enjoy local cuisine and the famous Greek ouzo in the shade of spreading plane trees. The main town square is adorned with an old church and a marble fountain dating from the late 19th century.
Sotiros is a settlement with its own special unique flavor, unhurried pace of life and, of course, the atmosphere of cordiality and hospitality of local residents and is perfect for those who want to relax away from the unnecessary bustle that is so typical for many coastal resorts.
However, if you cannot imagine your vacation without a traditional beach holiday, just a few kilometers from Sotiros there is a small resort town of Skala Sotiros with a magnificent beach, which is rightfully considered one of the best on the island and a lot of entertainment. The main attractions of the Rock of Sotiros are fragments of a prehistoric settlement and ruins of Roman baths, as well as the oldest olive press on the island of Thassos.
It is worth noting that not far from Sotiros is one of the main shrines of the island of Thassos - the active nunnery of St. Panteleimon.
