Description of the attraction
Paros' traditional windmills are considered a symbol of local architecture. Such structures are found throughout the island. Some of them have survived in their original form and today are practically not used, gradually falling into ruins, while others have been renovated and work as hotels, cafes and art galleries.
In the past, these windmills were vital for the locals. Using the power of the wind, people ground the grain of wheat, the most important component of the diet of that time. Most of the mills were built in the 19th century, ceased to be used in the second half of the 20th century, with the arrival of more modern, faster and more efficient technology in these regions.
A good traditional windmill can be seen today at the port of Parikia, the busiest spot on the island. Today this windmill serves as a tourist information center and a picturesque decoration of the city.
During your trips around Paros, you will see such mills in the region of Naoussa, Marpissa, Lefkes and Aliki, they are an integral part of the local landscape.
