Description of the attraction
One of the oldest museums in the city of Lugansk is the Museum of Local Lore. The collection of the museum is located in the original constructivist building built in 1976 on Shevchenko Street. The Lugansk Museum of Local Lore is not only the largest museum institution in the region, but also a research and scientific and educational center, as well as the main repository of monuments of material and spiritual culture of the entire Lugansk region, a scientific and methodological center of museology in the region.
The history of the creation of the Museum of Local Lore is quite common. In Lugansk, with the establishment of Soviet power in Ukraine, in 1920, two not very large museums were created - the natural-geographical museum and the museum of pictorial culture, which by 1924 were united under a new name - Donetsk Social Museum. In 1938, there were more than 9 thousand exhibits in this museum.
During the war, the Donetsk Social Museum was destroyed. The revival of the museum began in 1945, but in a completely different room. Initially, a small room was found for the museum and several surviving exhibits were allocated. But in 1978, thanks to the labor success of the Ukrainian architect L. Hammerstein, the museum was provided with another room with an area of more than 2000 sq. m., in which it is still located.
Today, in nineteen halls of the Museum of Local Lore, there are more than 300 thousand exhibits, of which about 180 thousand are originals. They all reveal the history of man and the history of the region. The museum staff has formed and collected an archaeological collection, numbering over 65 thousand items that belong to different eras and different nationalities inhabiting these regions. For visitors to the Museum of Local Lore, excursions on various topics are offered, based on materials from the museum's collection.
