Description of the attraction
The main square of Zielona Góra, square in shape, is called the Market Square or, as the Poles say, the Old Market Square. It is where the heart of the entire city beats. Previously, fairs and city meetings were held on it, now it resembles a public garden, in the center of which the Old Town Hall building is located, which is considered the most recognizable building in the city of Zielona Gora. From time immemorial, people gathered here to find out the latest news, listen to the verdict of the city court, and see old acquaintances.
In the 60s of the XX century, traffic was prohibited along the perimeter of the square. An exception was made only for taxis and buses.
The buildings on the square were constantly changing their appearance due to numerous fires. Those mansions that now surround Stary Rynok Square date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During one of the reconstructions of the square, fragments of buildings built in the 14th century, when the square itself was founded, were discovered under the paving stones. Archaeologists covered their find with thick glass, which protects the stones from the sun's rays and rain and snow. These excavations can be seen at the northern wall of the Town Hall.
The town hall itself was built in time immemorial. The first building for the local mayor was made of wood. In the Middle Ages, it was damaged by fire. The building that we see now was erected in the Gothic style in the 15th century and was subsequently rebuilt several times. The tower, which appeared a century later than the town hall itself, acquired a Baroque vault at the beginning of the 20th century, where three lanterns were installed. Currently, the town hall houses a trendy restaurant, a tourist center where you can borrow a map of the city for free, and a registry office.
