Description of the attraction
The Old Pomor Old Believer Church in Barnaul is one of the city's iconic sights. It is located next to the river station on Chekhov Street, on the left bank of the Barnaulka River, slightly east of Bavarin Square. The temple was consecrated in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos of the Old Believers-Pomors.
The old church of the Barnaul community was closed in the 1930s. After a while, the temple was completely destroyed. Later, the services were held in an adapted building. However, in 1997, the city authorities decided to transfer a two-story brick house built at the beginning of the 20th century to the Barnaul Pomor community. Unfortunately, this building was in disrepair.
Previously, the building belonged to the Old Believer Pomorian, who serves as a manager at one of the city factories. By the mid-1990s. the building of the Old Pomeranian Old Believer Church was almost completely destroyed, only the walls survived. As a result, homeless people settled in the church and started a fire here. The church fell into complete desolation, the ceilings collapsed, its territory began to be overgrown with weeds. It was in this terrible form that the city authorities handed over the temple to the community. Soon, restoration work began in the church building.
The restoration of the temple was carried out with funds raised by the community itself. The house has been partially renovated in the Baroque architectural style. A shining dome is erected over the altar part. In the future, it is planned to build a bell tower at the Drevle Pomeranian Old Believer Church.
