Description of the attraction

One of the oldest castle complexes in Carinthia, the Falkenstein fortress consists of two parts: the Lower and Upper Falkenstein. The Lower Castle is currently in excellent condition, while the Upper Castle, located near a mountain stream, which can be reached on foot in 25 minutes, was seriously damaged during the construction of the tunnel. Now these are shapeless ruins.

The castle complex can be found in the Mell Valley, a few kilometers from the town of Oberfell. It was probably built in the 11th century, although the first mention of it is found in the annals of 1164.

In those days, the castle consisted of a master's palace and a small chapel, in which the chaplain, who lived at the fortress, conducted divine services. The Chapel of John the Baptist was first mentioned in a written source in 1246 and was significantly expanded and rebuilt in a Baroque manner in 1772. It is still used today.

The dominant feature of the Lower Castle is a high, powerful tower, which is built into the rock. The castle got its name in honor of the first owners - Messrs. Falkenstein. After the disappearance of the Falkenstein dynasty in 1300, the Upper and Lower Castles were divided between the local nobles. Throughout their history, the fortresses have changed their owners more than once. There was a time when one of them belonged to the Habsburgs.

Until now, the Lower Castle is privately owned. It is open to tourists only during the summer months. This building can be rented for any kind of celebration: weddings, anniversaries, etc.
