Description of the attraction
Agios Dimitrios Church is the symbol of Karpenisi. The hill, which is called the Hill of St. Dmitry, is located near the city and is visible from any point on it. The temple on a hill formed by a landslide more than a thousand years ago was built in 1886 and since then the church is a real gem and one of the main attractions of Karpenisi.
As a result of the conducted research, it was found out that at the top there was once a castle, a citadel of an ancient settlement. Here, pottery, pieces of masonry and other finds related to different time periods were discovered. Also on the eastern side, during the excavation of the road, they found a cave with stalactites, but so far it is closed to the public.
In one of the ancient settlements that existed in the area around the hill, the so-called "Karpenisi treasure" was found, which consists of 35 unique masterpieces of Hellenistic culture. The treasure is in the National Archaeological Museum.
