Description of the attraction
The natural monument “Chatsky's Head” rock is another attraction of the city of Zhitomir. An amazingly shaped rock is located on the left bank of the Teterev River. It is 30 meters high and 120 meters wide. The rock "Chatsky's Head" is not only a symbol of the city, but also a geological monument of national importance.
The bizarre rock is not a specially made sculptural composition, but a natural monument, which was formed as a result of the weathering of granite rocks. The first written mention of "Chatsky's Head" dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, and this mention has nothing to do with the long-standing legend about the origin of its name.
In profile, the natural monument resembles a human face, which, having become a symbol of Zhitomir, now claims the status of a miracle. The "Chatsky's Head" rock is a bust of a man with sedate features, a large nose, a strong torso and arms lowered along the torso. Due to this appearance, the rock attracts great attention from both locals and tourists.
There are many legends around the “Chatsky's Head” rock associated with its name. One of them claims that during the persecution by the Cossacks from the “Head of Chatsky” cliff, the Polish nobleman Chatsky rushed into the river, and according to another version, the rock got its name in honor of the founder of the Kremenets Lyceum, Chatsky.
"Chatsky's head" is very clearly visible from the hill, which is located near the Monument of Glory, as well as from the observation deck, which was specially created at the dam of the Teterevsky reservoir. Opposite this natural monument is another famous rock "Four Brothers".
Today the rock "Head of Chatsky" is a popular place for recreation of city residents in the summer. There is a pine forest near it, and on the contrary there is a deciduous slope.
