In the city of Severomorsk, on the large central square of Primorskaya, a monument to the heroes of the North Sea is erected, or, as the people call it, the monument to Alyosha. During the harsh years of the Great Patriotic War, the North Sea residents decided to erect a monument in the blessed memory of the fallen front-line soldiers and friends. At this time, in the units on the ships began collecting funds for the needs of the construction of the monument. The idea of building the monument was such that it could be seen from afar.
In the middle of 1945, the idea of creating a monument-lighthouse on Salny Island appeared, which, in addition to the aesthetic side, could show the way to sailing ships and vessels. Gradually, 5 million rubles were collected for the construction of the monument, but the hardest living conditions prevailing in the fleet prevented this business, which is why the People's Commissar of the Russian Navy decided to give the collected money for the needs of capital construction.
During the 1950s, the question of erecting a lighthouse monument was again raised. It was also supposed to be installed on the island of Salnoye. As the plan for the detailed development of the monument progressed, it was decided to erect a monument in the city of Severomorsk, the capital of the Northern Fleet, because this city is visited by almost all sailors who enter the service in the navy.
The opening date of the monument - June 10, 1973 - coincided with the 40th anniversary of the Navy, which is why a solemn ceremony of opening a new majestic monument took place. The main author of the project was G. V. Neroda. - the famous sculptor, corresponding member of the State Academy of Arts of the USSR, as well as People's Artist of the RSFSR. The honored artist of the RSFSR Neroda Yu. G. also took part in the project; one of the oldest Moscow architects, Professor VN Dushkin, was the architect of "Alyosha"; A. A. Shashkov became an engineer-lieutenant colonel of the project.
While working on the commemorative monument, it was necessary to position it correctly in the surrounding area. An unprecedented contribution to this business was made by the chief engineer-architect of the project, officer-severomorets Shashkov. Indeed, thanks to the implementation of his ideas for the construction of a monument and the Primorskaya square of the city, Severomorsk managed to reach the sea embankment with its main square, which is especially rare in various cities of our Motherland, in which port facilities literally cut off the entire city from the sea coast.
The monumental monument is a huge bronze figure of a sailor holding a submachine gun. It was cast at the Monuments-Sculptor plant, which was located in the city of Leningrad. When erecting such a huge sculpture, about 200 different parts were used, the total weight of which reached 63.4 tons, and which were precisely assembled in fifteen fortified blocks. The size of "Alyosha" can be judged according to some data: the wrist of the right hand has a weight of about 0.3 tons, the left hand - 1 ton, the weight of the machine gun in the hands of the North Sea is 2.2 tons. The overall statue of the sailor is approximately 17 meters high, which is firmly mounted on a pedestal that reaches 10 meters in height. After the assembly of the figure at the plant was carried out, it was decided to improve its strength more with the help of a steel frame, for the erection of which at least 35 tons of rolled metal was used. Based on the results of all the works envisaged by the project, the total weight of "Alyosha" was about 100 tons. The memorial pedestal was made in the form of a figure reminiscent of the conning tower of a submarine, and special bronze bas-reliefs were installed on the side faces of the monument - it was on them that all the components of the compound were listed, as well as the warships of the navy, which distinguished themselves to a greater extent during the Great Patriotic War. war.
