Description of the attraction

Makarovsky Bridge - a pedestrian bridge in Kronstadt, is a monument of history and architecture of the XX century. It is located in the central part of the city, not far from the Summer Garden, in the narrowest part of the Kotlin Island, connecting Red Street and Anchor Square. The Makarovsky Bridge was built by the workers of the Marine Plant. It has the status of an object of cultural heritage of the Russian Federation, it is protected by the state.

During the construction of the Naval St. Nicholas Church, the question arose of how to Emperor Nicholas II to get to the place from the Petrovskaya pier. Nicholas II arrived at the consecration of the beginning of the construction of the Naval Cathedral by car, and the emperor was taken to the consecration ceremony of the cathedral itself in an open carriage along Prince (now Kommunisticheskaya) Street. In order to shorten the way, the Committee for the Construction of the Naval Cathedral (in addition, he was responsible for the construction of the monument to S. O. Makarov), it was decided to build a pedestrian bridge across the ravine. This business was entrusted to the Kronstadt Steamship Plant.

There is a legend according to which Emperor Nicholas II considered the bridge fragile, and he did not cross it until one day one officer dared to demonstrate by his own example that it was completely safe to cross it. The officer for this act was awarded the order personally from the hands of the emperor.

A month and a half after the consecration ceremony of the Naval Cathedral, on July 24 (August 6), 1913, a monument to Admiral S. O. Makarov. The opening was attended by the widow and son of Stepan Osipovich.

In 1913, the first version of the Makarovsky Bridge was formed - with a metal frame and wooden flooring. With the construction of the bridge over the ravine, the need to bypass it or go down to the 3 lower bridges across the watercourse is a thing of the past. True, the peculiarity of the wooden deck of the bridge was an obstacle to the passage of military units and the passage of cyclists, and therefore it was forbidden to use the bridge.

In 1940, the bridge underwent reconstruction, but after it the ban remained in force until 1970, when the bridge was completely redone. During the reconstruction, the bridge was replaced with exactly the same one, but welded, and now it differs only in the absence of rivets (which are present at the Drawbridge not far from the petrovsky dock bath port). For strength, the flooring frame was covered with metal sheets, and only then it was poured with asphalt.

In the Soviet years, the bridge bore the official name Red, after the name of the street, although at that time, even in official sources, other names were often used: Suspended, Hanging, Makarovsky.
