Description of the attraction

The market square in Kielce was founded in the second half of the 12th century, and in the middle of the 14th century it was named the Market Square. For many centuries, from the moment of its foundation, the Market Square served as the main shopping area of the city, a venue for local fairs and festivals.

During archaeological excavations on the square, the ruins of the old town hall were found, the construction of which began in 1523 at the initiative of Bishop John Konarski. The building was two-story with a hall, watchtower, and councilors' chambers. Not far from the building was a pillar of shame, where city executions and flogging were carried out. The town hall was destroyed by a terrible fire that engulfed the city on May 24, 1800.

The most beautiful buildings of the city are located on the square. In the southern part there is a building built in 1767 by the architect Macheli Gilbo for the bishop of Krakow. Currently, the building houses a cafe. Next to the cafe you can see one of the most beautiful buildings in Kielce - a Baroque house with exquisite stucco decorations on the facade. Now the editorial office of a Polish newspaper is located here.

Today the Market Square is the center of the cultural life of the townspeople. There are pedestrian zones, recreational areas, bicycle parking and cafes.
