Description of the attraction

The market square in Lviv is not only a favorite resting place for citizens and guests of the ancient city, but also the main square, where life has been in full swing for a long time. As in many cities in Poland, the Market Square was the focus of the city's social and commercial life.

Until today, the square has retained its shape, and its buildings have practically not changed. It is noteworthy that the original buildings of the 15th century were completely destroyed by fire. However, the buildings were quickly restored, with the remains of old buildings being used as the basis. The exterior of the buildings was influenced by the Renaissance. And to this day, the architecture of the market square is striking in its harmony and spirit of the Middle Ages. The general architectural plan of the buildings was developed by the Italian architect P. Happy. The facades of the houses are richly decorated with carvings, decorative elements, and sculptures.

It is interesting that during the construction of the area, the purchase of real estate was strictly monitored by the antimonopoly commission. So, even the richest person could not buy or build a house with a facade wider than three windows. And this is what helped to create a unique appearance of the square, when the continuous building has its own unique architecture every three windows. On the first floors, as a rule, there were artisan shops and stalls.

Today, there are numerous souvenir shops where you can buy traditional Ukrainian products of folk craftsmen, cozy cafes, museums. The most notable architectural monuments on the square can be called the "Black Stone" and the Kornyakt's house, where today the exposition of the Lviv Historical Museum is located.

Walking around the square, you can enjoy not only the beautiful architecture, but also plunge into the unique atmosphere.
