Description of the attraction
Torri del Benaco is a small town with a population of about 3 thousand people, located on the "Veronese" shores of Lake Garda at the foot of Mount Baldo. Surrounded by pine forests, olive groves and lemon greenhouses, it is known as the Olive Riviera. Rovereto is 45 km away and Verona is 40 km away. To get to Torri del Benaco, take the Gardesana East Highway or take one of the many ferries.
For the first time, people appeared on the territory of modern Torri del Benaco in the second millennium BC. - This is evidenced by the discovered remains of pile dwellings and rock carvings on Mount Baldo depicting scenes from everyday life. Like other cities of Lake Garda, after the fall of the Roman Empire, Torri was captured by the Goths, later by the Lombards, and in the 10th century by the Franks. Probably for this reason, in 905, King Berengaria I of Italy ordered to surround the town with powerful walls and erect the Berengaria Towers, the ruins of which are visible to this day. Then Frederick Barbarossa and the Scaliger family ruled here. In 1405, Torri became part of the Venetian Republic, and almost five centuries later became part of a unified Italy.
For a long time, Torrey's economy was in a state of stagnation, which forced many local residents to leave the city. However, in the 1920s, when the Gardezana Highway was built, an upswing began. Today, the main sector of the local economy is tourism.
Torri del Benaco is perhaps one of the few towns on Lake Garda that has managed to preserve its historic center almost intact. The Church of San Giovanni, Trinita and San Gregorio, located in Pai, at the entrance to the city, dates back to the 7th century. The ancient castle was built in the 14th century by Antonio della Scala. Next to it stands the Church of San Pietro and San Paolo, which houses works of art in marble and paintings. Today this church is dedicated to the memory of all those who died in world wars. In Piazza Calderoni, you can see the Palazzo dei Capitani, built in 1452.
The most popular sport in Torri del Benaco is sailing, thanks to the light breezes and calm waters of Lake Garda. Diving, water skiing, fishing and just swimming are also popular. In the forests surrounding the town, you can walk along one of the many trails, or go mountain biking on the slopes of Monte Baldo. For extreme lovers, several climbing routes are open. And in the neighboring town of San Zeno di Montagna, Torri is the Jungle Park amusement park. In winter, there are ski slopes on Monte Baldo.
