Description of the attraction
In the Aegean Sea, in the southern part of the Cyclades archipelago, lies the small Greek island of Folegandros. Until recently, this rocky island was not very popular with tourists. Nevertheless, picturesque natural landscapes, interesting sights, azure waters of the Aegean Sea and a special atmosphere of comfort attract more and more lovers of calm and measured rest to Folegandros every year.
The name "Folegandros" also bears the capital of the island, often referred to as "Chora" (however, like many administrative centers of small Greek islands). The town is located on a cliff top (200 m above sea level) about 3-4 km from the port of Karavostasi and is a traditional Cycladic settlement with small snow-white houses built close to each other and narrow cobbled streets. Chora is a pedestrian-only town and parking is only available on the outskirts. Here you will find a small selection of small but charming hotels and apartments, as well as cozy taverns and cafes serving traditional Greek cuisine. In the upper part of the city is the medieval fortress of Castro, built by the Venetians back in the 13th century.
In the vicinity of Chora (about 4 km), on the slope of a picturesque cliff, there is one of the most famous sights of the island - the Church of the Virgin. A zigzag road leads to the majestic white structure at the very edge of the abyss. The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and coastline.
Folegandros is one of the most picturesque Cycladic settlements, a visit to which will leave a lot of positive emotions and impressions.
