Located in scenic vineyard countryside, the Moorilla Antiquities Museum houses one of Australia's finest collections of historical relics.
Built on a small 5-hectare peninsula, this private museum is one of the most popular destinations for tourists who come to Hobart to learn about the history of ancient civilizations. The museum's collection is estimated at $ 10 million. It, in particular, features the African Gallery with gold bars, sculptures and beaded objects of folk art. Ancient sarcophagi and other artifacts can be seen in the Egyptian Gallery, and gold items, ceramics and sculptures from Central America are displayed in the Pre-Columbian Gallery. In addition, the museum has an extensive collection of books on various aspects of ancient civilizations, culture and religion. Any book with prior permission is available for review.
The museum building itself is the former home of the famous Tasmanian Claudio Alcorso, a philanthropist, winemaker, patron of the arts. Several barbecue and picnic areas, as well as cafes and restaurants, are located next to the museum on the banks of the Derwent River. Local wine can be tasted at the nearby Moorilla estate.
