Description of the attraction
You can diversify your leisure time and get acquainted with the more than a thousand-year history of the capital of the same name of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg by visiting the City History Museum located in the very heart of the old city on St. Esprit Street.
The Luxembourg City History Museum first opened its doors to the public in 1996. Like the city itself, the museum harmoniously combines the past and the present. Actually, the building of the museum is a whole complex of four restored residential buildings, erected in the 17-19 centuries, with an original addition in the form of a modern glass facade. The huge panoramic lift, which can accommodate up to 65 people, is also made of glass, which allows you to fully enjoy the breathtaking views of the Grund and the Ram plateau on the upper floors, and to see the rock formations on the lower levels. Old vaulted cellars discovered during excavation work in the early 1990s are also open to the public.
The exposition of the museum perfectly illustrates, also thanks to modern multimedia and interactive technologies, the history of urban planning in Luxembourg and acquaints its guests in detail with the cultural, economic, political and social development of the city since its inception. The museum collection includes paintings, sculptures, topographic models (on a scale of 1: 666), furniture, tools and equipment, photographs, historical documents and much more. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum hosts various temporary exhibitions on a regular basis. Particular attention is paid to conducting a variety of general education programs for children.
