Description of the attraction

The Berber (Amazigh) Museum is one of the cultural attractions of Agadir. It is located in the center of the coastal part of the city, in a small two-storey building along Passage Aït Souss between Boulevard Hassan II and Avenue Mohammed V. It is here that the collection of Berber objects of the 18th - 19th centuries is located. The city beach is located 50 meters from the museum.

Berbers, who called themselves Amazigh, which means "free men", were the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa. Their culture and language have been influenced not only by African but also by the Mediterranean. The history, myths and legends of the Amazigh have been traced for 9 thousand years.

The inauguration of the Museum of Amazigh Heritage took place in February 2000. And all this thanks to the initiative of French volunteers and the city government, which in every way is trying to preserve the culture of the Berbers.

The Berber Museum in Agadir consists of three rooms. The first room houses a collection that includes materials and products of local origin. Here, visitors have the opportunity to see carpets, various clay products: kitchen utensils, building materials and much more. The second room is dedicated to subjects demonstrating the skills and knowledge of the Berbers. This room displays weapons, traditional clothing, musical instruments, protective talismans, ancient manuscripts and various handicrafts collected from all over the southern part of the state. The third hall will especially appeal to lovers of artisanal products, as it is entirely dedicated to amazing precious and semi-precious jewelry, of which there are about 200 items - these are wonderful bracelets, chic brooches, amazing earrings and chains. The main decoration of the hall, which is also a symbol of the museum, is the luxurious Massa necklace.

On the ground floor of the Berber Museum, in a small gallery, you can see paintings by local artists. They depict mainly Amazigh men and women in traditional dress.
