Description of the attraction
The building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, located at Hrushevsky 5, is rightfully considered one of the outstanding architectural monuments of the twentieth century. And not only the proximity to the Mariinsky Palace makes it so, in many respects lies the merit of the architect Vladimir Zabolotny, who won the competition in 1936.
The building of the Verkhovna Rada was erected for three years, from 1936 to 1939, and was put into operation almost immediately after the completion of construction.
This building, clearly visible from afar (thanks to the huge glass dome), is still the center of political life, while remaining an object of architectural heritage. It embodied the forms and techniques traditional for the 30s of the last century, and the harmony with which it fits into the local landscape cannot but amaze.
The building of the Verkhovna Rada was designed in a symmetrical rectangular shape and has a height of only three floors, however, thanks to the dome located on the flat roof, it seems somewhat larger than it actually is.
In the building, everything is thought out to the smallest detail: the simple architectural forms of the lobby of the main entrance look great with the solemn staircase and marble columns of the foyer. This unique harmony was achieved due to the fact that everything in the building, including door handles and furniture, was made according to the author's works especially for him. A special place in the building of the Verkhovna Rada is occupied by the decor, which embodied the motives of the Ukrainian ornament. It can be seen everywhere - in the plafond (which houses the composition "Blooming Ukraine"), in stucco, inlay, painting, etc. At the same time, there is absolutely no feeling of artificiality, bombast and unnaturalness - the building of the Verkhovna Rada seems to have been created so that it would be possible to do everyday work in it without any problems.
