Description of the attraction
May 17, 1901 the laying of the building of the eye clinic began on the Plats-parade square, which was at that time on Volskaya street between Bakhmetyevskaya and Beloglinenskaya streets. The clinic was the first building of a gradually being built up area, later one of the buildings of the pedagogical institute and private houses were built on it, narrowing the area to the size of a small street, which was named after Zauloshnov (a Saratov man who raised a red flag on the battleship Potemkin in 1905). The Plats-Parade Square is also known for the fact that there is a house-museum of Viktor Borisov-Musatov on it.
The construction of the eye clinic was carried out from 1901 to 1904 in the image of one of the best clinics in Madrid. The author of the project was the talented Saratov architect Zybin. An important contribution to the construction of the clinic was made by Mikhail Fedorovich Volkov, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy, who organized a fundraiser for the construction of the building and the latest equipment for the hospital. Ophthalmologist M. F. Volkov by profession became the first head of the new eye clinic, and later the head of the city.
Now this building houses the Clinic of Eye Diseases on the basis of the Saratov State Medical University with highly qualified doctors and the latest diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, known all over the world and considered one of the best in Russia.
The building of the eye clinic is a historical landmark of the city of Saratov and an architectural monument protected by the state.
