Description of the attraction
Bazaar Suq el-Attarin was built in the middle of the XIII century by order of Abu Zakaria - a ruler from the Hafsid dynasty. This market is located near the Medina (the main square of the city) in the Alexandria quarter on rue Attarin, very close to the Roman amphitheater. The fact that it is located not far from the Zitoun (or al-Zaytoun) mosque is not accidental - earlier the entrance to this building was only allowed for people engaged in noble professions. The merchants were certainly one of them.
Souk el-Atarin is considered the oldest market in Tunisia. Modern Souk el-Attarin is a picturesque quarter of the city, which emerged on the site of a medieval perfume market. From the very beginning of its existence, he specialized in the sale of cosmetics and incense. The first merchants who traded in this market came from the Arab countries of the East and traded exclusively in expensive and not all accessible products.
Like any Arab bazaar, Souk el-Attarin is a labyrinth of narrow alleys and small streets lined on both sides with a variety of shops and shops. Like many centuries ago, this market is considered a trading place for the most unusual goods, and although there is no longer the variety that was in ancient times, you can still order an aromatic mixture or buy Indian incense, henna, all kinds of spices, candles and aromatic herbs.
