Description of the attraction
Azenas do Mar is a city located on the sea coast. Azenas do Mar is located in the municipality of Sintra, which in turn is part of the Lisbon region. The name of the city is translated as "sea mill". According to some sources, the history of this ancient city dates back to the period of the Arab occupation. Then the first water mills appeared, known as "azenash", hence the name of the city.
The city is located on a cliff, the ocean is stretched below, and from the side it seems that the city is poured into the rock, and some houses seem to be balancing on the edge of the abyss. In the 1930s, after the opening of the tram line, Azenas do Mar became a famous tourist destination in the Lisbon region thanks to its endless beaches and natural pools in the rock.
There is a legend that on the day of the opening of the tram, instead of water in one of the city's fountains, the famous Portuguese red wine Kularish poured. Azenas do Mar is closely related to the production of this wine. On the territory of the city there were plantations of grapes "Ramishko". Due to the sandy soil, the grapes were planted at depths, which were sometimes more than 10 meters, in order for the seedling to be planted in moist soil. The Ramishko variety is rich in tannins, the wine is aged for a long time in oak barrels, which is why the wine has a tart taste and can be stored for a long time. It is worth noting the fact that no alcohol is added to the wine.
The inhabitants of this small town are also engaged in fishing and shellfish fishing.
The picturesque landscape of Azenas do Mara and the close proximity of the ocean attract a large number of tourists who want to rest and recuperate.
