Description of the attraction

Bristol Castle, once built on the orders of William the Conqueror, has defended the city for centuries. The castle was first mentioned in written sources in 1088. Then it was a wooden fortress, but soon the castle was rebuilt in stone. High walls and towers, the most modern fortifications at that time, the fortunate location of the castle between two rivers made it impregnable. This stronghold played a significant role in the wars for the throne of England after the death of Henry I. Noble captives and hostages were kept here.

However, already in the middle of the 16th century, the castle began to collapse, but the city authorities could not do anything with the castle, which was in the ownership of the king, and the castle becomes a refuge for lawbreakers. In 1656, by order of Oliver Cromwell, the castle was demolished.

Now, on the site of the castle, a park is laid out, which is called the Castle Park. In some places in the park you can still see the ruins of the castle.
