Description of the attraction

Supramonte is an area covered with mountains and hills in the central and eastern parts of Sardinia. It lies northeast of the Gennargentu massif, stretching all the way to the shore of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The total area of Supramonte is about 35 thousand hectares, on which the communes of Baunei, Dorgaglia, Oliena, Orgosolo and Urzulei are located. True, all these settlements lie along the borders of the mountainous area, and it itself, with steep cliffs and deep canyons covered with lush vegetation, is mostly uninhabited. The highest peak of Supramonte is the peak of Monte Corrazi (1463 meters).

This area consists mainly of karst uplands, in which rivers have carved deep gorges and canyons. Today, most of the rivers flow underground, creating majestic caves such as the Grotte del Blue Marino, Grotte di Ispinigoli with the highest stalactites and stalagmites in Europe, Sa Oke (Voice) and Su Bento (Wind). Other interesting natural sites in Supramonte are the Donanigoro Plain, the Su Sercone sinkhole, the Gorroppu deep gorge and the Monte Novo San Giovanni limestone massif (1,316 meters). The so-called Supramonte Marino, that is, the coastal part of the mountainous country, lies within the communes of Dorgaglia and Baunei and borders the Gulf of Orosei. Here are the excellent beaches of Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Mariolu, Cala Goloritz.

In prehistoric times, the territory of Supramonte was more populated, as evidenced by the ruins of at least 76 settlements, 46 Nuragi, 14 dolmens, 40 "tombs of the giants", 17 sacred springs and 3 megalithic structures. Notable archaeological sites include the settlement of Serra Orrios with approximately 70 circular huts and two temples, as well as the Nuragi village of Tiscali, strategically located between the Lanaittu and Oddoene valleys.
