Description of the attraction
Radstadt is an Austrian city in the St. Johann district in the province of Salzburg. The city is located on the banks of the river, at the foot of the mountains. Radstadt is also called the "old town in the mountains".
The area around Radstadt was already in the 4th century BC. was inhabited by the Celts. Later there was a Roman settlement here. The place called Radstadt was mentioned in 1074, and it received the rights of the city in 1289, when the Pongau region became part of the Archbishopric of Salzburg. The Gothic temple in the city was consecrated in 1417, and the town hall appeared in the 16th century. In 1731-1732, the Protestant population was expelled, people were able to find refuge only in East Prussia thanks to the mercy of King Frederick William I.
In 1861, the lands of Salzburg were ceded to Austria, and in 1875 the Bischofshofen-Selzhol railway was built.
Today Radstadt is a popular tourist resort. The annual number of tourists greatly exceeds the number of local residents. Together with the neighboring town of Altenmarkt, Radstadt forms a well-known ski resort. During the summer, the town has tennis courts, a golf club and many hiking and cycling trails.
Radstadt is a member of the Small Historic Towns Association. The area around the city is famous for its numerous small but picturesque castles, such as the Tandalier Castle in the southwest of the city, or the 13th century Lärchen Castle, which now houses the collection of the city's local history museum.
