Description of the attraction
Dogon lands (Bandiagara plateau) lie in the area of the city of Duenza. The Dogon tribes are believed to have been the original inhabitants of the Nigerian river valley during the time of the Great Egypt of the pharaohs. For thousands of years, the Dogon have dwelt in villages built of pink sandstone, built their granaries by cutting them right into the surrounding cliffs, and harvesting meager crops in very small terraced plots in hard-to-reach places on the cliffs. Their homeland, the Dogon Plateau, has been included by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site due to its unique living conditions and the level of preservation in the beliefs of local residents of ancient worldviews of people. Although most of the Dogon have moved from the well-sheltered cliff dwellings to the plains below the slope, ancient villages are still inhabited, and new villages are still being built in the cliffs.
