The population of Sweden is over 9 million.

Before World War II, Sweden was a country of migrants, and today only 10% of the population are people born abroad and 1/5 of the population are immigrants or their descendants (most of the immigrants came to Sweden from Finland, Norway, Iran, Poland, Denmark).

National composition:

  • Swedes;
  • Finns;
  • Sami;
  • other nations (Greeks, Norwegians, Danes, Turks, Chileans).

On average, 21 people live per square kilometer, but the flat areas in the south of Central Sweden and the area along the southern coast are densely populated. The highest population density is observed in areas near Malmö, Stockholm and Gothenburg. The northern regions of Sweden and the Småland plateau are less populated.

The official language is Swedish, but English is also widely used here.

Major cities: Stockholm, Malmo, Uppsala, Gothenburg.

The inhabitants of Sweden profess Lutheranism, Islam, Catholicism, Judaism, Buddhism, Orthodoxy.

Life span

The male population lives on average up to 87, and the female population - up to 82 years.

Good indicators of life expectancy are influenced by the fact that the Swedes consume 2 times less alcohol than the Czechs, Russians, Ukrainians, French (Sweden is even called the most alcohol-free Scandinavian country).

In many ways, such indicators are the merit of the government, namely the state program, according to which restrictions on the sale of alcohol were introduced: it can be bought in special stores (they are separated from supermarkets and are open only during the day).

In addition, Swedes smoke 4 times less than Russians, Bulgarians, Greeks.

An important role is played by deductions for health care - the state of Sweden allocates $ 3,700 per year for this expenditure item per person.

Traditions and customs of the inhabitants of Sweden

Swedes are reserved, silent, law-abiding people (they are not ashamed to inform the police about offenses that are not directly related to them) who are afraid to make new acquaintances.

The culture of the Swedes is so arranged that they do not think of themselves as debtors - they strive to live at their own expense and not be subordinate to anyone (in order not to be a burden, many elderly Swedes themselves go to nursing homes).

Spring in Sweden is met at the end of April 30 (Walpurgis Night) - at this time the streets are filled with numerous students (their heads are decorated with white caps), who sing old school songs about their glorious and carefree future.

Swedes love to celebrate Midsummer (Ivan Kupala Day) - people in numerous companies go to the bosom of nature and have fun in the open air.

If you are going to Sweden, you should take into account that the Swedes do not talk about themselves, but if you manage to do the almost impossible - to get the Swede talking, you will not be able to stop him.
