Description of the attraction
The architectural monument "Tower of the Winds" is located in the city of Sevastopol in the central Leninsky district. It is a building that has survived to our time, from the period of its creation. There are very few such buildings in Sevastopol. The Tower of the Winds was built back in 1849. Its purpose was to ventilate the book depositories of the rather large Maritime Library. It was erected by a conductor engineer named Dikorev. And the project was handled by John Upton-Venikeev, who at that time was an engineer - colonel. In 1849, thanks to the initiative of Admiral Lazarev, the Marine Library was erected on the central hill of the city of Sevastopol. In 1855, during the siege of Sevastopol, the building burned down. Only the Tower of the Winds survived, which was located not far from the Vladimir Cathedral.
The Tower of the Winds is somewhat reminiscent of the ancient Greek Tower of the Winds, which is located in Athens. The Greek Tower was built of marble before our era. The Tower of the Winds has a rusticated lower tier and arched openings at the top. At the end, it is painted with a wide frieze depicting the gods of the winds, which are mythical. The cornices of the windows have drawings with masks of lions. The roof of this building is in the form of a tent with a spire. Previously, there was a weather vane on it. All the bas-reliefs of the tower represent a copy of the Athenian bas-reliefs. How many bas-reliefs the tower had the same number of faces - eight. But the Tower of the Winds in Athens is much more massive. If we compare both towers in width, then the Athenian tower is three times larger than the Tower of the Winds in Sevastopol. It has three entrances, which are framed by porticoes, and are completely windowless. At the Tower of Winds of the city of Sevastopol, the opposite is true - there is not a single entrance, but on the second tier on each side of the edge there is a beautiful window opening, which is covered with an arch.
There was a water clock inside this architectural structure, and a sundial, together with a weather vane, was located outside the building. This Tower was built in the classicism style. During its construction, processed Inkerman stone was used.
In 1979, the Tower of the Winds was included in the list of monuments of ancient architecture at the republican level.
