Description of the attraction

Boldwin Stairs is a public staircase in the city of Toronto. It is one of the most famous landmarks in the city, thanks in part to its mention in the famous comic book series "Scott Pilgrim" and in its subsequent film adaptation by Edgar Wright - "Scott Pilgrim Against All" (2010). The Boldwin Stairs got its name in honor of the Canadian lawyer and politician Robert Baldwin, whose family previously owned these lands.

The Boldwyn Stairs begins at the intersection of Davenport Road and Spadina Road and rises to the top of a steep hill - the terrace of the ancient Iroquois Lake, which existed here at the end of the last Ice Age about 12,000 years ago (at that time the territory of modern Toronto below Davenport Road was completely under water). Actually, this staircase actually connects the two parts of Spadina Road - it was very difficult to pave the road directly due to the features of the relief and the specifics of the rocks. As a result, the road was allowed to bypass the hills, and a wooden staircase was built for pedestrians, thanks to which city residents could significantly shorten their path. By 1913, the old wooden staircase had fallen into disrepair and was replaced with a new concrete structure.

In the 1960s, the Boldwyn Staircase was threatened with dismantling, since it was here that a high-speed tunnel was planned to be built as part of the Spadin high-speed tunnel. However, this project was sharply criticized by the public and was never implemented. In 1987, a large-scale reconstruction of the Boldvin Stairs was carried out.

After climbing the 110 steps of the Boldwyn Staircase, you can fully enjoy the picturesque panoramic views of the city, and then visit the nearby local attractions - Spedina Mansion and Casa Loma Castle.
