Description of the attraction

In the Nicosia district, 40 kilometers from the capital of Cyprus, at the foot of the Troodos mountains, there is a very small uninhabited village of Fikardou, which, nevertheless, is very popular among tourists. At the moment, this settlement has acquired the status of a kind of open-air museum. Residents left Fikarda back in the 19th century, but soon it was carefully restored, thanks to which it was possible to preserve all the originality of this place - residential buildings, their decoration has exactly the same appearance as they had in the 18th century, thanks to which you can immerse yourself in the history of this places. Beautiful wooden and stone buildings, decorated with skillful carvings, openwork balconies and colorful ornaments will not leave anyone indifferent.

Two houses of the village have been completely converted into museums, where you can see household items, clothes, tools, etc. One of these houses is called Katsinioru, after its former owner. It is a small two-storey building with a wooden roof, where traditionally the upper floor was reserved for living rooms, and the lower one was occupied by utility rooms - there they pressed grapes, stored wine, vegetables and fruits, and tools.

The museum is a remarkable example of a rural dwelling of the 16th-18th centuries. There were collected items that most vividly reflect the lifestyle of the local population of that time. In addition, there are many drawings, photographs and texts that show the process of Fikardou's restoration.

In addition to Katsinioru, in the village it is worth visiting the house of Akilis Dimitri, which has been converted into a weaving workshop.

It is worth noting that these two museums were awarded the Europa Nostra prize - the European organization for the protection and protection of cultural heritage.
