Description of the attraction

Copenhagen City Hall is an administrative building in which meetings of the Municipal Council were held and the mayor's office of Copenhagen was located. The town hall building was built in 1479, but due to city fires, the building burned to the ground twice - in 1728 and 1795. The modern building of the town hall, which we can see today, was erected in the years 1893-1905. The building was designed by the renowned Danish architect Martin Nürop in the Northern Art Nouveau style, after the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, Italy.

The entire building of the town hall was built of red brick; on the facade of the building, Bishop Absalon, the founder of Copenhagen, is immortalized in gold. The height of the clock tower of the modern town hall is 106.5 meters. In 1955, an ultra-precise clock was installed in the town hall, it shows the time of sunrise and sunset, the length of days and nights, world time for any city, the phases of the moon, the church calendar, the diagram of the movement of the planets around the sun and a map of the starry sky over Denmark. The author of the design was a talented mechanic, a member of the Danish Astronomical Society, Jens Olsen, who devoted forty years of his life to creating the mechanism of a unique watch.

Today, the city hall hosts meetings of the municipal council and city hall, as well as a variety of exhibitions and city cultural events. The central railway station and the Tivoli entertainment center are located near the Copenhagen City Hall.

Copenhagen City Hall is a popular attraction in Denmark, which is visited by a huge number of tourists from all over the world throughout the year.
