Description of the attraction
The National History Museum of Brazil was opened in Rio de Janeiro in 1922 by presidential decree. In 1940 he became world famous. The museum is located in the architectural complex of Santiago Forte. The area of the museum is about 20,000 sq. meters. The opening of the National Historical Museum was the impetus for the formation and opening of museums throughout Brazil. The architectural complex itself, which now houses the museum, was built in 1603. At first, it housed a prison, and later an armory.
Now the museum owns more than 287,000 items related to the history of Latin America and are of great value. The museum library contains about 57,000 books, many of which have been kept here since the 15th century, more than 50,000 historical documents and photographs. Most of it is occupied by household items, weapons, paintings, jewelry.
For 75 years of continuous activity, the museum has collected the largest numismatic collection in Latin America. Today, the National Historical Museum is under the protection of the Brazilian Ministry of Culture and is the most important cultural center.
