Description of the attraction
The National Historical Museum of Armenia (originally called the State Historical Museum of Armenia) is located in the central square of Yerevan - Republic Square. A huge number of different expositions dedicated to the history and culture of Armenia are presented to the visitors in the museum.
The Historical Museum of Armenia was founded in 1921 together with the Art Gallery of Armenia. The museum and the art gallery are located in the same building of the museum complex.
The rich collection of artifacts kept within the walls of the museum covers a fairly long period of time, from the Stone Age to the present. In total, there are about 400 thousand exhibits included in various thematic exhibitions. The exposition of the National Historical Museum of Armenia consists of several departments: archaeological, ethnographic, numismatics, historical architecture, and new and modern history of the Republic.
The largest collection of museum exhibits is located in the archaeological department and the numismatics department, their share, based on the total number of museum exhibits, is approximately 35% and 45%, respectively. A rich collection of bronze items dating back to the 2nd and 3rd millennia BC is especially popular in the museum. In addition, artifacts of a unique state in the Middle East - Urartu are kept here. These include cuneiform and wall inscriptions, bronze figurines, ornate pottery, and a collection of weapons with sculptures in ivory, silver and gold.
