Description of the attraction
Cape Todor is a bizarre, interesting shape. It enters the sea with three of its spurs at once. Therefore, they were called the "Neptunian Trident". The highest and southern spur is the Ai-Todor "tooth". For a long time it served as a very reliable and clear reference point for sailors.
At the highest peak of the spur, there is a lighthouse that can be seen far out into the sea. Its visibility reaches over fifty miles. This lighthouse has cultural and historical value, but still fulfills its purpose. A number of old trees have been preserved on the side of the mountain next to it. They are the remnants of the southern coastal forest. This forest is well over a hundred years old.
Mostly powerful oaks, pistachio trees and beautiful junipers grow in this area. The most valuable is the pistachio tree that grows near the lighthouse. This tree is over a thousand years old. It is officially listed in the Red Book and is the oldest tree in Crimea.
Ai-Todor has been used as a landmark for a long time and was listed on geographical manuscript maps. At present, an old handwritten Italian map has been preserved, the author of which is Visconti, on which the Ai-Todor landmark is applied. The date on the map is -1318. In the 15th century, the famous traveler Nikitin skirted Cape Ai-Todor. He traveled from Balaklava to the beautiful city of Feodosia.
For some time there was a Roman fortification on this cape. The archaeologists who found its remains named Kharax.
Currently, the Ai-Todorsky landmark-lighthouse, which was built in 1835 with the participation of MP Lazarev, the commander-in-chief of the operating Black Sea Fleet, is successfully functioning.
