Description of the attraction

The Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ was erected in 1900 with funds donated by the Emperor Alexander III Foundation. The consecration of the cathedral took place in May 1901.

In addition to its main purpose, the cathedral was also used as a school, headed by the wife of the first rector of the temple, priest A. Mikhailovsky. Several military units were assigned to the temple. Some time after the consecration, a clergy house was built near the cathedral. Over time, restoration work was carried out in the temple, during which the refectory part of the temple was expanded, a memorial service and a chapel named after St. Innocent of Irkutsk were added.

The immigrants who arrived for permanent residence in the Far East brought with them the memory of their native land and shrines. That is why the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God was written for the cathedral.

In the late 1930s. the city authorities decided to transfer the building of the temple to the possession of the Far Eastern Railway for a kindergarten. The Nativity of Christ Church reopened its doors for believers during World War II, acquiring the status of a cathedral. In 1945, on the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the first service was held in the revived church. In the 1970s. a beautiful carved wooden iconostasis appeared in the temple.

The status of the cathedral was returned only in 1989. 15 years later, a new cathedral, the Transfiguration of the Savior, was consecrated in Khabarovsk.

In the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, you can see many different images of the Mother of God, the Savior and other saints. Today the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ is on the list of objects of the Khabarovsk Territory of great historical and cultural value.
