Description of the attraction

One of the most famous and popular religious buildings in the city of Madurai, which is located in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is the Hindu temple of Kodal Azhagar. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and is one of 108 temples created in honor of Vishnu, which are scattered throughout the vast territory of India.

The name of the temple comes from the words "Kodal", which is another name for Madurai, as well as "Azhaghar", which means "beautiful".

Kodal Azhagar is located right in the center of the city and is one of its oldest shrines. In addition, this temple is considered one of the oldest in the entire southern part of India. Like many similar temples of that time, it was built in the Dravidian style. Its beautiful tower, which is also called "gopuram", is decorated with a huge number of figures of different sizes, among which you can find people, animals, mythical characters, and deities. They are all very detailed and painted in vibrant colors, among which blue, green and red prevail. Also on the front of the building is a large sculpture of the deity, in honor of whom this temple was created - Vishnu. He can be seen in the temple in three different positions - sitting, standing and reclining.

The interior of Kodal Azhagar is no less beautiful than its exterior. The entrance to it is decorated with a carved ornamental colonnade, and its halls are striking with painted walls and ceilings. In addition, the temple has a whole exposition carved from wood, which depicts the coronation of Rama.

The temple is very easy to reach from almost anywhere in the city, which makes it even more attractive in the eyes of tourists.
