Description of the attraction

The Assumption Monastery is the main attraction of the city of Odessa and is located at: Monastyrsky Lane, 6. The Orthodox Monastery is named in honor of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos. His story is very interesting, but also tragic.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the lands of Odessa, where the monastery is now located, belonged to the Moldovan nobleman Alexander Teotul. One day Teotul ordered to light a flame on the shore. At night, the ship's captain accidentally confused the fire with the light of the lighthouse, after which the ship hit the rocks and crashed. Feeling guilty for the death of people, the nobleman in 1814 donated his possession to the Church for the construction of a monastery and a lighthouse. In the same year, Metropolitan Gabriel founded a bishop's metochion here, which in 1824 was transformed into a monastery in honor of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos.

At first it was a small wooden church, and in 1825 a stone two-altar cathedral was built. In 1834, a second monastery church was erected in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Life-Giving Spring", and then a third church was built - in the name of the miracle worker Nicholas.

After 1936, the church in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God was blown up. The monastery was completely revived only in 1944. In 1946-1961. The church housed the summer residence of the patriarchs of Moscow and All Russia and the Odessa Theological Seminary; the Monk Kuksha of Odessa, Metropolitan John (Kukhtin), Archbishop Onisifor (Ponomarev) also lived. In 1965, the residence of the ruling bishop of the Odessa diocese was transferred to the monastery.

To date, on the territory of the monastery, thanks to Metropolitan Agafangel, have been created: a bell tower, which has a temple in honor of the great martyrs Boris and Gleb, and a chapel. The chambers of the patriarch, the bishop's hotel were also restored, two archimandrite multi-storey buildings and a winter greenhouse were built, and in 2012 a large pilgrim hotel was erected.
