Description of the attraction
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary, also called the Kapfinger Chapel, is located in the Kapfing district, which was previously an independent village, later annexed to the city of Fügen. To find this chapel, you will have to turn left from the local fire station and walk a little down the hill. It was built in 1746, although its façade is adorned with the numbers "1700". Hans Geisler, the owner of one of the companies in Kapfing, paid for the construction of the chapel.
Bishop Leopold von Spaur of Brixen visited this chapel in 1749 and blessed it. He emphasized that believers come here and pray to Jesus Christ for the destruction of heresy in the Zillertal valley. From this call it becomes clear that it was at this time that Protestantism became popular in the Zillertal.
The Kapfinger Chapel is one of the landmarks of the ancient city of Fügen, now a popular ski resort. The Virgin Mary Chapel is a small building with one nave and a gable roof, over which you can see a low turret topped with an onion dome and a weather vane in the shape of the Austrian flag. It is located slightly below the cross that crowns this whole structure. Wooden doors lead to the chapel. A small canopy is installed above the arched portal, repeating in its shape the outline of the roof. There are two oval windows on either side of the door.
Such a small, secluded standing temple has a rather rich interior. There is a magnificent marble altar, where under glass there is a sculptural composition depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. There are statues in the church and some other saints.
