Description of the attraction
Bhadra Nature Reserve is located on the slopes of the Western Ghats, in the lush tropical jungle of Karnataka. Initially, when in 1951 this territory was declared a reserve, it was called the Jagara Valley Nature Reserve, after the name of a small village that was located not far from this place. But in 1974, the reserve began to bear the name Bhadra, like the river flowing through its territory, moreover, its area was increased from 77 sq km to 492 sq km. And in 1998, the reserve was also declared a kind of tiger reservation. For this, it was necessary to implement a plan to relocate 26 villages that were located on its territory. The settlements were moved to a distance of 50 km from the boundaries of the reserve.
Bhadra is divided into two parts - western Lakavalli-Muthodi and eastern Bababudangiri, and is surrounded by picturesque hills and steep mountains, such as the highest mountains in the state, Mullayanagiri and Kallahathigiri. There are several large waterfalls in the reserve.
Bhadra is home to many animals and birds that feel great in this protected area. There you can watch parrots, peacocks, partridges, elephants, roe deer, Indian gauras and, of course, tigers. According to the national program for the protection of these animals, wounded and weak tigers are brought to the reserve, and at the moment about 33 of these huge cats live on its territory. Most of the trees are deciduous trees, about 120 species in total, including teak and rosewood.
The most successful time to visit the reserve is from November to March. On its territory, special mini-hotels were created for tourists wishing to see the beauty of Bhadra.
