Description of the attraction
Murau is an Austrian city, the capital of the region of the same name, located in Upper Styria. This area existed in the Bronze Ages; the Romans lived on the territory of modern Murau. The first documentary mention of Murau dates back to 1250, and 48 years later, in 1298, it received the status of a city. In the 13-15th centuries, power in Styria belonged to the Liechtenstein family, who came from Lower Austria.
During World War II, the camp of the German army was located in Murau, and British prisoners of war were also kept here. In early May 1945, resistance groups freed the prisoners. The city was until 1955 in the zone of British occupation.
From a tourist point of view, the city is interesting for its medieval streets, beautiful churches and alpine landscapes. Murau is famous for its quality and delicious breweries, as well as wooden souvenirs.
The main attractions include: Murau Castle with an interesting knight's hall and prison; The parish church of St. Matthew, built in the early Gothic style in 1296; Anna's Church, built in 1400. In addition, the former gallows by the road to Ranten, consisting of three stone pillars and a base, is of great interest to tourists. It is also worth visiting the wonderful Murau Museum of Local Lore.
