Description of the attraction
The Museum of the Book of A. P. Chekhov "Sakhalin Island" in the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is one of the cultural attractions of this city. The name of the famous Russian writer A. P. Chekhov and his book "Sakhalin Island" have become original symbols of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The museum plays an important role in popularizing and preserving the heritage of the writer A. P. Chekhov on Sakhalin.
The museum began its history in the 80s. of the last century, when, thanks to the influence of the local community and the intelligentsia, the idea of founding a museum for the Chekhov's book "Sakhalin Island" received a response from well-known "Chekhovists" from all over the Soviet Union. To collect funds, a special account was opened and a public fund was created. The museum collection was based on the collection of the private collector and local historian G. I. Miromanova. The local historian collected this collection all over the country. Also, the personal belongings of A. P. Chekhov, pieces of furniture and household items that belonged to the family of the writer, as well as the artwork of S. S. and S. M. Chekhovs and a huge number of other items that later formed the basis of the museum fund.
The grand opening of the A. Chekhov book museum "Sakhalin Island" in a small two-storey house on Kurilskaya Street took place in September 1995. Today the museum has the largest collection of publications of the book "Sakhalin Island".
In February 2013, the museum was provided with new premises, which is the only high-tech museum building built in the Far East. On an area of about 2 thousand square meters. accommodated: spacious storage facilities, two halls - an exhibition and a film lecture, a restoration workshop.
The main place in the museum is, of course, devoted to the book "Sakhalin Island". Museum visitors can learn in detail about the life of the writer, his aspirations, creative path and Sakhalin travel.
