Description of the attraction
Stanpit Marsh is a nature reserve near the seaside resort town of Bournemouth. This unique place combines salt bog, freshwater bog, reed beds, sandy and pebble beaches.
More than 300 plant species grow on 65 hectares of the reserve, 14 of which are rare and endangered. In addition, 312 bird species live here. Some nest in these swamps, but most are migratory, for which Stanpit Marsh is a great place to rest and search for food during migration. Also here you can find many species of amphibians and insects, including the jungle toad. Stanpit Marsh is a birdwatching paradise and is a kind of sport in Britain.
There is a canal through the swamps, which is called "Mamasha Stiller's Ditch" - in honor of Hannah Steller, who lived in the 18th century, the owner of the local pub. The canal approached the back door of the pub, and was actively used by local smugglers. A collapsible bridge (Bailey Bridge) is thrown across the ditch, one of the few that has survived since the Second World War.
