Description of the attraction

The main city gate in Vrsar used to be part of the city walls. The gate is located in the eastern part of the city, near the church of St. Fosc.

In the past, they were used as the main entrance to the city of Vrsar. At that time, the main life went outside the city walls, which gave the city reliable protection against threats, both potential and real. Outside the city walls until the 19th century there were only a few detached buildings and one church.

The main city gate of Vrsar was built in the 13th century in the form of a semicircular arch. The style of the gate is Romanesque. The doors are made of Istrian oak, and they are upholstered in forged metal. Above the arch you can see the symbol of the Venetian Republic: a shield, which depicts a lion with wings and a lowered tail, holding a Bible. The fact that the Bible is closed indicates a warlike attitude (the opposite is an open book, which symbolizes a peaceful attitude).

The style in which the lion is made is reminiscent of the Venetian lions of the XIV-XVI centuries. In this regard, it is difficult to say when exactly the symbol appeared on the gate of Vrsar.

There is a school near the Vrsar gate, which was built in the nineteenth century.
