Description of the attraction

Fresach is an Austrian commune located in the federal state of Carinthia, part of the Villach district. The local lands were inhabited as early as 590 AD by the Slavs. The first church in Fresach was built in the 12th century. The city was almost completely destroyed by the Turks in 1478. In 1518, all the territories surrounding Fresach were taken over by the Habsburgs. At the beginning of the 16th century, most of the population was Protestant. Even after the Counter-Reformation, many residents remained true to their faith. After the decree of Emperor Joseph II on religious tolerance in 1782, a Protestant parish was reopened in Fresach, and in 1787 the first school was built.

Fresach is a climatic resort, tourism plays a big role for the city's economy, providing the population with jobs.

The main attractions of interest to tourists include the Catholic Church of St. Blasius, built in 1565, as well as the Diocesan Museum, which moved to a new building in 2011.
